The Arrow 500 was quite trashed mechanically- I changed all the guides, reconditioned the spindle (reground the cone, new bearings installed, O rings changed etc), cleaned up thoroughly and the machine is now running well. The Arrow 1000 on the other hand has a peculiar issue.
